For many of us who grew up in the 90s, veteran journalist Tony Calvento will always be associated with the now-defunct crime and investigation program Calvento Files. Growing up, he left an impression of being a no-nonsense, hard-hitting broadcast journalist. I was quick to assume he would be intimidating and scary (for lack of a better term) in the flesh. I had that image of him in mind for the longest time that I was really surprised to see the total opposite when I met him for the first time last August.

Our group of invited bloggers was given the chance to have a quick interview with Mr. Calvento during the gala premiere of Cinemalaya 2017 entry Nabubulok. His youngest son Sonny is the film’s writer and director. My first (and last) interview with him showed us his side which many don’t get to see – the loving and doting father. It was touching to see someone strongly opinionated be very expressive about his love and appreciation for his child.

It is sad to know that Mr. Calvento passed away yesterday, October 9. According to the news report this morning, he died due to multiple organ failure. His son posted this on Facebook:

Mr. Tony Calvento’s remains lie in state at Chapel 3, The Heritage Park, Taguig. Funeral service will be held on October 10-13 at 3PM onwards. Cremation will be on October 14 (Saturday).

Here’s the first and last interview I had with him. He was talking about his son Sonny and his film Nabubulok. The film won Best Production Design in Cinemalaya 2017 and will soon be screened at the Busan International Film Festival (October 12-21, 2017).

Note: My camera’s LCD was cracked during this interview and couldn’t see the framing but I still went on just so I could capture his words. Glad I did.
