For years, bullying, especially in online spaces, has remained a serious concern in the Philippines. With the rise of social media, harmful words and false accusations can spread quickly, often leaving negative impact on families, most especially, children. What was once confined to school premises has now taken a more public and persistent form. Accountability becomes even more urgent.

Just last week, actor-politician Alfred Vargas and his wife, Yasmine, made headlines after taking legal action related to cyberbullying. Now, the couple has escalated their response by formally filing 20 counts of cyber libel. This signals a stronger stand against what they describe as ongoing online attacks targeting their family.

The situation, which began earlier this year, reportedly worsened despite attempts to resolve it privately. According to the couple, the issue grew into a series of posts circulating online that carried damaging accusations, even as they chose to remain silent at first.
In addressing the public, Yasmine explained why they ultimately decided to speak up. She said, “In recent days, our family has been in the spotlight after we made the difficult decision to stand up for our son.”
She also expressed gratitude for the support they have received during this time, “I am deeply thankful for the messages of support we’ve received, as well as the sincere questions from those who wish to understand what happened. I would like to respond with clarity and respect. Maraming salamat sa lahat ng nagpadala ng dasal, suporta, at pagmamahal sa amin. Sa totoo lang, ito po ang nagpapalakas sa aming pamilya sa gitna ng pinagdadaanan namin.”
Yasmine emphasized that she is not someone who seeks conflict and that their initial approach was to handle the matter quietly. She related, “For those who know me, you would understand that I am naturally shy and reserved, and not someone who looks for conflict. We tried to handle this quietly and peacefully—para sa kapakanan ng aming mga anak, na dumaan na sa matinding sakit at trauma.”
Still, she acknowledged that there is a limit to staying silent. “But there comes a point when silence is no longer an option,” Yasmine continued.
Speaking as a mother, she highlighted the pain their family has endured. “Bilang isang ina, hindi ko po kayang manahimik habang patuloy na nasasaktan ang aking anak at pamilya,” she said. Their decision, according to her, is rooted in protecting their children and standing up against bullying. “Kaya pinili naming magsalita—hindi dahil gusto naming makipagtalo, kundi dahil mahal namin ang aming mga anak. Para sa kanila, at para sa lahat ng batang nakakaranas ng bullying, naninindigan kami,” the fighting mother clarified.
Confirming their legal move, Yasmine stated, “Today, I filed 20 counts of cyber libel.”
She also recalled their earlier effort to resolve the matter through dialogue, which did not stop the spread of accusations. Yasmine expressed sadness over the situation, “Nalulungkot po ako na umabot pa sa ganito. Sinubukan naming idaan sa maayos na pag-uusap noong Pebrero, ngunit sa halip, nagpatuloy ang mga posts sa social media na naglalaman ng maling paratang laban sa akin, sa aking asawa, at sa aming pamilya, even after we chose to remain silent. Hindi na po ito maaaring magpatuloy.”
According to the couple, the claims circulating online are unfounded. “These claims are false and are meant to damage our name and reputation,” they argued. With the case now filed, they are placing their trust in due process. “Pinili naming dumaan sa tamang proseso. Nagsampa na po kami ng reklamo at kalakip nito ang aming ebidensya. Tiwala po kami na lalabas ang katotohanan,” Yasmine said in her official statement.
They also expressed appreciation for those who continue to support them, “Sa lahat ng sumusuporta, nagdarasal, at naniniwala sa amin—maraming salamat. Hindi po namin ito kakayanin nang kami lang.”
Beyond their personal experience, Yasmine appealed to the public to be more mindful online, “At sa publiko, nakikiusap po kami:
Let us choose kindness.”
She ended with a reminder about the harm caused by online negativity. Bullying, in any form, has no place in our community.”
