‘The Garden of Earthly Delights’, directed by Morgan Knibbe, is set to premiere at this year’s QCinema International Film Festival, running from November 14th to 23rd. This ambitious project represents a significant international collaboration.

The Collaboration
Produced by the renowned Amsterdam-based BALDR Film, known for films that have screened at major festivals including Cannes, Berlinale, Venice, and Sundance, the film is co-produced with the Filipino production house Popple Pictures and Belgium’s CZAR Film. The film has received early recognition and funding from the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), the Netherlands Film Fund, and the Flanders Film Fund.

Overview
The film takes audiences into the bustling and harsh environment of Manila. Centering on eleven-year-old Ginto, who dreams of leaving his scavenger life for a future as a gangster while confronting his emerging sexuality, the narrative intertwines with that of Dutch tourist Michael. After realizing he’s been deceived by his online Filipino girlfriend, Michael ventures into the city’s red-light district, where conflicting desires collide. The film vividly illustrates the intersection of Western wealth and postcolonial poverty.

About the director
This project marks the feature debut for director Morgan Knibbe, who co-wrote the screenplay with Roelof Jan Minneboo. Knibbe is recognized internationally for his impactful work, notably his documentary ‘Those Who Feel the Fire Burning’, which was the Dutch entry for the Oscars and garnered over 30 international awards. His time in the Philippines in 2015 as a cinematographer on a documentary sparked the idea for ‘The Garden of Earthly Delights’.

Purpose and Message
Knibbe emphasizes the film’s powerful mission, “This film exposes postcolonial inequalities that persist globally, confronting audiences with uncomfortable realities. Using the power of cinema, we aim to highlight exploitation and marginalization while inspiring collective action for a more equitable society.” He views this project as a collaboration between Western and Eastern perspectives, amplifying authentic narratives.
Creative Collaboration
The partnership between BALDR Film and Popple Pictures was crucial for sensitive storytelling. Armi Rae Cacanindin, CEO of Popple Pictures, highlighted the importance of authenticity and local insights, ensuring the representation of the Philippines remains grounded yet respectful.
Awards and Future Screenings
‘The Garden of Earthly Delights’ has already won acclaim, including Best Director at the Golden Calves (Dutch Academy Awards), often referred to as the Dutch Oscars. Following its debut at QCinema, the film is set to have its international premiere at the Torino Film Festival in Italy.
Unorthodox Casting Approach
Committed to realism, the film employed an unorthodox casting approach by selecting non-actors for the lead roles. This decision was intentional, providing a genuine reflection of marginalized lives in Manila. The casting process involved street casting in Metro Manila, resulting in the selection of JP Rodriguez for the lead role of Ginto, alongside other everyday kids.
Meet the cast
The main cast includes theater and film performers Francesca Dela Cruz and Bunny Cadag, with acclaimed Dutch actor Benjamin Moen portraying Michael. Moen has a notable portfolio, with previous nominations for his acting performances.
