Can love survive when the future demands that it be left behind?

That haunting question lies at the heart of The Blue Hour, the upcoming Boys’ Love film projecr from award-winning Filipino screenwriter and director Adolfo Borinaga Alix, Jr., produced by Hotbox Media Productions. Intimate yet emotionally huge, the film happens over the course of just 24 hours, where every conversation, every choice, and every goodbye could influence two lives forever.
With the tagline “One day to forget a lifetime…,” The Blue Hour offers a personal story about love that has long existed in hiding.
Leading the cast are Migs Almendras as Rafa, a rising leading man whose career is about to take off, and Paolo Gumabao as Enzo, a gifted basketball player on the verge of entering the professional league. Just hours before a career-defining contract signing, the two retreat to a secluded beach house in Pampanga to end the secret relationship they have shared for three years.

Also joining the cast are Eian Rances as Gael, whose tragic past becomes a painful reminder of the dangers of living in secrecy, and James Lucero as Teejay, Enzo’s basketball teammate who has a history with him.
According to the film’s official logline, Rafa must spend one final day with Enzo in Pampanga, confronting the ghosts of their past while trying to save the future they have each worked so hard to build. But saying goodbye proves far more complicated.
The official synopsis reveals a story that is not limited to romance. Under the strict ultimatum from Rafa’s manager, “Tito Ed,” the pair go through a day marked by emotionally charged encounters. As social media gossip surrounding their relationship begins to spiral, they find themselves haunted not only by public scrutiny but also by the memory of Gael, a mutual friend who “couldn’t survive the closet,” and by the unexpected blessing of Enzo’s mother.
The Blue Hour finds its emotional weight in quiet moments, difficult conversations, and the painful realization that love alone may not always be enough.
Director Adolf Alix, Jr. explained that the title itself captures the exact placement where the characters find themselves in — somewhere in between. He shared, ”’Yung blue hour po ’yun ’yung pagitan bago magsunrise. So kung meron pong dawn atsaka sunset meron ding blue hour na parang pagitan. So, parang in the film kaya ko siya kaya ako nag-decide na sabi ko tawagin siyang Blue Hour because yung characters nila ay parang nasa pagitan in a decision whether to be sa sunlight, sa dawn sila, sa sunset. Kasi kung itutuloy ’yung relasyon nila, hindi natin alam kung makakabuti or makakasama. So kaya inisip ko po na gawin na The Blue Hour yung title.”
He added that, at its core, the film is driven by one simple intention, “Idea ko lang po talaga is to examine ’yung relation nila.“
That symbolism is echoed throughout the film’s concept. The “blue hour” refers to the fleeting period of twilight when the sun is about to rise, a brief space suspended between darkness and daylight. It is a fragile transition. Much like Rafa and Enzo’s relationship, it exists between secrecy and revelation, hope and heartbreak, certainty and sacrifice.
For Paolo Gumabao, taking on the role was as much about the story as it was about the opportunity to collaborate with acclaimed filmmakers. He said, “Perfect opportunity to work with Direk, work with the cast, and to tell great stories. So ako naman as an actor, I’m always excited to tell great stories na alam ko maraming makakarelate. Stories that I think mirrors reality.”
With its intimate setting, unique characters, and themes of identity, ambition, and love, The Blue Hour aims to tell a story that feels deeply human. It asks what happens when two people who love each other are forced to choose between living honestly and protecting everything they have worked for.
When the blue hour fades and the first light of day arrives, Rafa and Enzo will have to decide whether their love belongs in the sunlight or whether it was always destined to exist only in the space between.
