Taguig is my second home, especially since I still go home there at times and it was in the city where I spent a huge part of my pandemic experience. I’ve witnessed firsthand the striking contrast between Bonifacio Global City and the more modest neighborhoods surrounding it. This contrast fuels my hope for the city’s continued and balanced development.

For two hours straight with just a quick water break, Direk Lino Cayetano answered questions from the press without sitting down.
The recent press interview with TV and movie director Lino Cayetano, hosted by Regal Films’ Roselle Monteverde and Atty. Keith Monteverde-Teo, left me feeling optimistic. Cayetano’s vision for the country resonates deeply and not once did his answers to questions elicit the familiar cringe I get from traditional politicians. His straightforwardness and sincerity reminded me of a similar experience in 2019, when colleagues and I interviewed then-political newcomer, Vico Sotto. Like Sotto, Cayetano answered with candor and direct eye contact. So far, both men seem refreshingly free of the self-serving (a.k.a. epal) tactics that plague many politicians.

Cayetano, known for his work in the Philippine entertainment industry, is running for congressman of the first district of Taguig Pateros. His career has spanned directing, producing, and even a stint as mayor of Taguig. Now, he’s aiming to bring his experience and passion for public service to a new role in Congress.

Family and Independence: Real-life telenovela unfolds
One of the unique aspects of Cayetano’s campaign is his decision to run as an independent candidate and the complex family situation surrounding it. This decision came after his family, including his older brother Senator Alan Peter Cayetano and sister-in-law Mayor Lani Cayetano, chose to support another candidate, creating a “telenovela” like scenario. The younger Cayetano said, “Parang telenovela ‘yung pinagdadaanan namin ng wife ko. As you probably know, si Kuya Alan and his wife Mayor Lani are supporting another candidate, na okay lang naman sa akin. Okay lang sa akin. Pero siyempre, there are challenges sa family.”
“Noong mayor po ako, ng tatlong taon, I decided not to run for re-election para magbigay daan kay Mayor Lani,” he explained. “Itong eleksyon na ito, 2025, I told my family again na gusto kong bumalik bilang mayor kasi nakikita ko bilang mayor mas marami ka talagang matutunungan. Again, sabi nila, Mayor Lani wants to run. So, I stepped aside and I decided to run for Congress. Akala ko madali na nila akong masusuportahan. Pero I decided to run as independent with or without their support.” These days, he finds comfort in the support that his wife, professional volleyball Fille Cainglet-Cayetano, and their children give.
While acknowledging the challenges this presents, Cayetano remains hopeful that family ties will prevail. “But at the end of the day, we’re family,” he asserted. “And alam nyo naman ‘yung eleksyon, parang showbiz. Minsan nagkakaroon ng alitan, nagkakaroon ng intrigahan. But I’m hoping and I’m praying that at the end of the elections, makita nila that we’re still family.” He stressed that his focus is on serving the people of Taguig Pateros, a value he believes is more important than family disputes.

“Running as an independent allows me to do what we do here in showbiz,” Cayetano explained, highlighting showbiz workers’ ability to collaborate and work with various individuals and groups without being bound by party affiliations. He emphasized the importance of collaboration, drawing parallels to his experience in the entertainment industry where partnerships and teamwork are essential for success.
Showbiz Roots and Public Service: Collaborative Approach
Cayetano’s background in showbiz has significantly shaped his approach to public service. “Marami sa inyo, nakilala ko when I was 25, 26 years old. Nagsisimula ako sa showbiz,” he recalled, “I think hard work defines us in this industry.” He emphasized the importance of teamwork and open communication, values he believes are essential for effective leadership. Cayetano believes his experience in the entertainment industry, particularly his work ethics and collaborative spirit, has prepared him for the challenges of public office. “I think naging effective ako as a mayor because of our experience working together, producing, directing,” he stated.

His understanding of the needs and concerns of the entertainment industry is also a driving force in his congressional run. Cayetano aims to be a voice for the industry in Congress, advocating for policies that support its growth and development. He recognizes the challenges faced by the industry, including declining box office numbers and the need to adapt to evolving distribution channels. “We need to look at the different distribution channels and check paano natin masaserbisyohan lahat ng Pilipino,” he suggested, emphasizing the importance of accessibility and inclusivity.
Zero-Waste and Sustainability Advocacy
Beyond his commitment to the entertainment industry, Cayetano is also a strong advocate for environmental sustainability. He proudly announced that his latest film, “The Caretakers,” is the first zero-waste film in the Philippines. This initiative reflects his commitment to promoting environmentally responsible practices in both the film industry and beyond. He explained the concept of zero-waste in simple terms, “Kung metikuloso ka, walang nang makakarating sa landfill,” explaining the importance of mindful consumption and waste management.
Focus on Local Issues
Cayetano’s campaign is centered on addressing the specific needs and concerns of the people of Taguig Pateros. He emphasized his commitment to working closely with local government units to improve various aspects of life in the district. “I will work closely and pagsisilbihan ko yung LGUs ng Taguig at ng Pateros,” he assured, promising to be a representative who prioritizes the welfare of his constituents. He identified key areas of focus, including job creation, traffic management, flood control, and healthcare, recognizing that these are issues that affect the daily lives of people in his district.
No National Aspirations
Despite his ambitions in Congress, Cayetano made it clear that he has no plans of running for a national seat in the future. “Wala akong ambisyon o interes in national politics or national government,” he stated. According to him, his focus remains firmly on serving the people of Taguig Pateros and contributing to the betterment of their lives. He expresses a desire to potentially run for mayor of Taguig again in the future, demonstrating his commitment to local governance and his dedication to the community he serves.

Director Lino Cayetano’s campaign for congressman is a mix of his showbiz background, passion for public service, and commitment to local issues. He aims to bring his unique experiences and perspectives to Congress, advocating for the entertainment industry, promoting environmental sustainability, and working towards a better future for the people of Taguig Pateros.
