December Avenue continues to shine after 15 years, celebrates with a sold-out concert
December Avenue, a five-piece band, has firmly established itself as a well-loved fixture in the Philippine indie pop and alternative rock scene. With their relatable lyrics and LSS-worthy melodies that resonate with listeners, the band has cultivated a loyal fanbase. Their songs, often centered around themes of love, heartbreak, and moving on, have struck a chord with many, making them a significant presence in the local music landscape.
Soundtracks and Streaming Success
Several of December Avenue’s hits have transcended the airwaves, finding their way into the soundtracks of popular Filipino films. One of their most notable collaborations was with Moira Dela Torre for the song “Kung ‘Di Rin Lang Ikaw,” which became the theme for the 2019 blockbuster movie Hello, Love, Goodbye, starring Kathryn Bernardo and Alden Richards. Other standout tracks like “Eroplanong Papel,” “Bulong,” “Sa Ngalan ng Pag-ibig,” and “Huling Sandali (Tayo Sa Huling Buwan)” have also resonated widely, further cementing their place in the OPM (Original Pilipino Music) scene.
In 2019, December Avenue achieved a significant milestone when they were recognized as Spotify’s Most Streamed Artist in the Philippines. Their album Langit Mong Bughaw also became the Most-Streamed OPM Album of All Time, a testament to their widespread appeal and the deep connection their music has with listeners.
A Dream Come True: December Avenue’s First Major Concert
After 15 years in the industry, December Avenue is set to hold their first major concert on August 30 at the Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena. Directed by Paulo Valenciano, the event promises to offer fans an enhanced and unforgettable musical experience. Valenciano shared his vision for the concert, stating that the goal is to give the audience the same emotional impact they feel when listening to December Avenue’s music, but in a more elevated and immersive way.
Reflecting on their journey, Valenciano recalled the early days when the band played in smaller venues like Teatrino Promenade. He expressed pride in seeing the band achieve such a significant milestone, saying, “They deserve this. Their commitment to the quality of their music, their music videos, and the live experience of December Avenue is impressive.” The concert, titled “Sa Ilalim Ng Mga Bituin: December Avenue Concert,” is already sold out, prompting the opening of a new standing room only (SRO) section to accommodate more fans eager to witness the band’s milestone event.
From Struggles to Success: The Band’s Journey
The road to success for December Avenue has not been easy. In the early days, members Zel Bautista, Jem Manuel, Don Gregorio, Gelo Cruz, and Jet Danao struggled to make ends meet, often paying out of their own pockets to perform at small venues. Despite these challenges, their passion for music kept them going. Lead vocalist Zel Bautista recalls the stereotype that being in a band wouldn’t be a viable career, especially from the perspective of parents. “When we started, we had to pay out of our own pockets to perform, and when you’re just starting, no one’s going to watch you,” Bautista shared.
Guitarist Jem Manuel noted that the struggles helped the band forge a strong bond. “The good thing about it is the chemistry we built. So, whether we were performing for one person or thousands, our energy remained the same,” he said.
As their popularity grew, the band members eventually left their day jobs to focus solely on their music. Bautista recalls a turning point in 2016 when they booked the Teatrino to test whether they still had a fanbase. The show sold out, giving the band the confidence to continue pursuing their dreams.
Awards and Achievements
Over the years, December Avenue has earned numerous accolades for their contributions to the Filipino music industry. Their awards include the 2020 Silver Wishclusive Elite Circle for the songs “Sa Ngalan Ng Pag-ibig” and “Kung Di Rin Lang Ikaw,” the Best Song Written for Movie-TV at the 33rd Awit Awards for “Huling Sandali,” and the Most Popular Recording/Performing Group at the 51st Box Office Entertainment Awards. They were also recognized as the Most Influential OPM Band of the Year at the EdukCircle Awards in 2019 and received Rock Artist of the Year and Rock Album of the Year honors at the 12th Philippine Movie Press Club (PMPC) Star Awards for Music for Langit Mong Bughaw.
A Glimpse of What’s Next
Fans attending the sold-out concert on August 30 will be treated to a special performance of an unreleased track titled “Magparaya,” inspired by the personal heartbreak of drummer Jet Danao. Describing the song, Danao shared that it’s about letting go of someone you love deeply, choosing their happiness over your own. The song will officially be released at midnight on August 31, marking yet another chapter in December Avenue’s evolving musical journey.
