In a story that questions the nature of guilt and redemption, Green Bones emerges as a powerful inclusion to this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival list. The film, a collaboration among GMA Pictures, GMA Public Affairs, Brightburn Entertainment, and Columbia Pictures, builds on the success of their previous hit “Firefly.”

Behind Prison Walls

At the heart of the story is Domingo Zamora (Dennis Trillo), a prisoner approaching his release date after serving time for his sister’s murder. His path to freedom becomes complicated by Xavier Gonzaga (Ruru Madrid), a new prison guard carrying his own emotional wounds from his sister’s death. As Gonzaga observes Zamora’s unusual behavior in prison, his professional duties blur with personal agenda, leading him to question whether any murderer truly deserves a second chance.

The film ties in Philippine folklore about “green bones,” said to appear in the remains of those who lived good lives. This belief creates a stark contrast with Gonzaga’s hardened view of the world, who dismisses the possibility that criminals could possess that kind of hope. Despite Zamora’s reputation for reform, Gonzaga’s doubt overtakes, driven by his unresolved grief.

Powerhouse Production

Director Zig Dulay, coming from successes like “Maria Clara at Ibarra,” “Legal Wives,” and “Sahaya,” brings his touch to this psychological drama. The screenplay also bears the craftsmanship of National Artist Ricky Lee and Anj Atienza, whose recent work earned Best Screenplay honors at MMFF 2023.

Dennis Trillo returns to the Metro Manila Film Festival alongside Ruru Madrid, who makes his festival debut. The supporting ensemble includes veteran performers Michael de Mesa, Ronnie Lazaro, and Wendell Ramos, with award-winning actress Alessandra de Rossi adding power to the cast. Special appearances by Iza Calzado and Nonie Buencamino enhance the storytelling.

The film also features strong performances from Kapuso talents Mikoy Morales, Royce Cabrera, Sofia Pablo, Sienna Stevens, Kylie Padilla, Pauline Mendoza, Gerhard Acao, Raul Morit, Victor Neri, Ruby Ruiz, and Enzo Osorio.

As “Green Bones” prepares to open this Christmas season, it promises to challenge audiences’ perspectives on justice, forgiveness, and the possibility of change, making it a must-see holiday offering that goes far beyond typical festival fare.
