When I walked into the New Frontier Theater, I already knew I was a fan — after all, I play Dionela’s music almost every day. But even with all that familiarity, I arrived without expectations. It was going to be my first time hearing him live, and I simply wanted to experience the music I loved straight from the artist who created it.

As part of my coverage, I anticipated a strong performance, but the night became meaningful for reasons far deeper than that. Long before the night’s biggest surprise, the energy inside the venue already hinted that this wasn’t an ordinary show.

Dionela turned the first night of his “The Grace Tour Manila” concert into an emotional milestone when he proposed to his non-showbiz girlfriend, Meizy Mendoza, on Friday, November 21, at the New Frontier Theater.
For years, Dionela and Meizy have quietly built a relationship that grew alongside his music, with their partnership often reflected in the emotions behind his songs. That history became part of the moment when he called her onstage, inviting her to join him before thousands of fans who had witnessed his rise. He then asked her to sing the chorus of “Bahaghari,” one of the tracks that mirrors his love for her.
After Meizy sang, fan-cams captured Dionela visibly trying to gather himself before beginning his message.
“Wait lang,” he said, drawing loud cheers from the crowd who seemed to sense what was about to unfold.
Then came a deeply personal recounting of their journey. “Sinamahan mo ’ko mula umpisa, hanggang sa dulo mahal,” he told her. “Naalala ko na kasama kita noong binenta ko yung huling gitara ko at gusto ko nang mag-quit. Tapos umiiyak tayong dalawa nun. Nandito na tayo sa New Frontier, ang daming tao. Sinamahan mo ’ko mula umpisa hanggang ngayon. Gusto sana kitang yayain samahan mo ’ko habang buhay.”
Fans roared as Meizy began to cry. Dionela then knelt down and asked, “Meizy Joaquin Mendoza, will you marry me?” Meizy immediately said yes. “Everybody, she said YES!” he exclaimed, prompting another wave of cheers before the couple shared a tight, emotional embrace.
“The Grace Tour” marks Dionela’s homecoming after performances in the US, Canada, Australia, and Dubai, as well as his first major solo concert in the Philippines. Ahead of the two-night show, he also announced that proceeds would be donated to victims of Typhoon Uwan — adding a layer of generosity to an already extraordinary night filled with music, testimony, love, and the promise of forever.
