For years, some Filipino viewers have drawn comparisons between actor David Chua and Taiwanese star Jerry Yan, who rose to fame across Asia through the hit series Meteor Garden.
Because of their facial features and overall resemblance, David has often been referred to by fans online as a “Pinoy Dao Ming Si,” after Jerry Yan’s iconic character, while others have likened him to the Taiwanese actor himself.
Beyond those comparisons, David has built a career spanning acting, directing, producing, and television.
He first gained wider attention in 2008 after appearing alongside Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson in ABS-CBN’s adaptation of My Girl, which introduced him to a broader television audience.
David also attributes his distinct features to his family background. His late father was partly German, while his mother is Filipino.
“Technically, my surname should be Kummer — David Kummer. But I took on my mother’s maiden surname,” he shares.
His appearance has also led to mistaken identities while traveling.
“When I’m abroad, they often think I’m Korean. Nagugulat sila pag sinasabi kong Pilipino ako,” he says.
Over the years, David has expanded his work beyond acting. In 2022, he became the only Filipino judge at the 13th SOHO International Film Festival in New York City.
He was also named an Empowered Men and Women Philippines Awardee in both 2022 and 2023, recognizing his contributions in entertainment and community work. In 2023, he received the Asia’s Man of Excellence in Entertainment Productions Award during the International Leadership Awards in Thailand.
Following the recent F4 concert in Manila, online discussions once again brought up the resemblance between David and Jerry Yan, with many netizens revisiting earlier comparisons.
“I really hoped to go backstage for this recent F4 concert. I’m a big fan, and kilig naman ako na sinasabi nilang kamukha ko si Jerry Yan,” David says.
Today, David continues to work both in front of and behind the camera. He serves as one of the directors of the long-running magazine and lifestyle program Rated Korina and is also part of TV5’s Mano Po Legacy.
“Masaya ako mapapanood ang ‘Mano Po Legacy’ sa TV5. Isa sa pinagmamalaki naming project ’yan,” he says.
Looking ahead, David says he is preparing for another project.
“We are working right now on something special and hopefully it starts production soon. Abangan na lang po!”
While comparisons to Jerry Yan continue to surface from time to time, David says he appreciates the compliments while remaining focused on his own work and upcoming projects.
