The first case of the MERS Coronavirus has already been reported yesterday in the Philippines after a Filipino OFW male nurse returned to Manila the other day from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Based on the reports (including Inquirer’s), the nurse has been exposed to the virus after attending to another Filipino victim of MERS who eventually died in the UAE. The OFW is now under strict medical observation by the Philippine Department of Health after the laboratory tests showed that he is positive from the virus. He is quarantined together with his family who fetched him from his arrival at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA). All of them don’t show any symptoms of the virus (which may include fever, cough, and muscle pain) but the family will still be quarantined for the next week or so, to contain any possible spread of the virus.

You may be wondering, what really is MERS Coronavirus?

The Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus or previously known as SARS-like virus is a respiratory and a flu-like illness which can prove to be deadly if not treated early on. It started as a widespread deadly disease in the Middle East in 2012 when a man in Saudi Arabia developed SARS-like symptoms which also caused his own death. A few months later, another reported case was seen in Qatar with huge similarities in symptoms. A person with MERS can also develop other complications such as pneumonia, kidney failure, or even death. (Source:

A total of 176 cases of MERS have already been reported since 2012 around the globe, with 58 deaths. The Malaysian just came back from a pilgrimage to Mecca and started developing symptoms of MERS. He was hospitalized for a few days before his eventual death. (Source: WSJ)

As of today, there are no known cures yet for the MERS Coronavirus and that health officials still have little information how this is being transmitted. (Photos from Wikipedia)
