Last weekend, Gerald made it to the trending topics of social media platforms after his admission in an exclusive interview that he is very happy now with girlfriend Julia Barretto. Earlier that day, Random Republika had the chance to briefly catch up with and talk to Gerald via an intimate Q&A after his launch as Rogin-E’s newest endorser. His answers to me and Manila Times’ Iza Iglesias revealed his strength in overcoming all the bashing and criticisms thrown at him since 2019.
With all the harsh comments, insulting memes, and hurtful remarks he has seen online, Gerald rolled with the punches. Asked by Manila Times how he did it, the actor said, “Sa social media, sa Facebook, sobrang dali nang mag-comment na parang hindi ko ma-imagine kung kaya kong mag-type ng ganun kasamang comment na makakasira sa ibang tao. Pero kailangan may perspective ka rin eh. Kumbaga, sobrang binash ako, sobrang daming nagalit sa akin sa social media dahil sa love life ko. Minsan, nakahiga ako sa kama, iniisip ko ‘yun, ‘Ang daming nagagalit sa akin dahil sa love life ko.’ Maraming tao diyan na mas malala, nangungurakot (He trailed off). ‘Pag ganun iniisip mo, mababawasan eh, nagagalit dahil sa lovelife ko, dahil hindi nag-work ang relationship ko. Kailangan may perspective ka.”
Gerald also added, “Kailangan tuloy pa rin ang buhay. Wala akong tinatapakang tao. I’m just trying to live life and provide for my family. Enjoy life. ‘Pag may perspective ka, malalagpasan mo naman. Things happen sa buhay mo for a reason. You have to realize kung saan ka rin nagkamali and move on, move forward with your life.”
I asked if he still gets annoyed by the jokes and memes, Gerald explained that he tries to understand where the mean comments are coming from. “You have to move on and just not take things personally,” he said.
Right now, the Init sa Magdamag actor is focused on meeting his acting goals and making his businesses thrive. Having his own family is also in the pipeline. He said, “Next step is magkaroon ako ng maliliit na katulad ko, ng pamilya. Darating din ‘yun. Hindi ko alam baka dahil birthday ko sa Sunday (He turned 32 last March 7), nagmamadali na rin ang mga tao na magkaroon ako ng pamilya. Darating tayo diyan.”
