The Philippines has a long and colorful history when it comes to love teams. From the iconic pairings of the ’70s like Tirso Cruz III and Nora Aunor, to the rise of heartthrobs and sweethearts in the ’90s like Rico Yan and Claudine Barretto, and the more recent pairings that dominate social media trends like Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla, Filipinos have always been drawn to on-screen romances that blur the lines between fiction and reality. Among these well-loved love teams, Marvin Agustin and Jolina Magdangal, affectionately known as MarJo, stand as icons of a generation. Now, they’re back and ready to rekindle the “kilig” in “Ex Ex Lovers,” a new romantic comedy from Project 8 Projects.

A Second Chance at Love

“Ex Ex Lovers” poses a simple yet compelling question: Can old love find a way back? The story centers around SC (Loisa Andalio), who asks her mother, Joy (Jolina Magdangal), to bring her estranged father, Ced (Marvin Agustin), home from Europe for her wedding. Joy, harboring years of unresolved feelings and resentment, travels to Malta, a journey that unexpectedly reignites the spark between her and Ced, even as they conspire against SC’s impending nuptials with Joey (JK Labajo). The film explores themes of forgiveness, second chances, and the intricate dynamics of family, all while delivering a dose of nostalgia with a modern twist.

Love Story with a Classic Heart

Adding a fresh perspective to the MarJo magic are Loisa Andalio and JK Labajo, representing the Gen Z generation. Their chemistry and youthful energy infuse the film with a contemporary vibe, creating a bridge between classic romance and modern sensibilities. Director JP Habac, known for his successful Valentine’s Day offering “I’m Drunk I Love You,” expresses his enthusiasm for returning to the rom-com genre. “As a fan of the MarJo love team, it feels surreal to see them laugh and cry in a film I directed,” says Habac.

From Streaming to the Big Screen

Originally intended for streaming, “Ex Ex Lovers” will now grace movie theaters nationwide. This decision came after discussions between Marvin, Jolina, and the production team. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime reunion that has to be experienced on the big screen,” the production team, led by Antoinette Jadaone, shared.
