The air crackled with anticipation as the grand press conference for “Espantaho” unfolded. Judy Ann Santos, the beloved Filipino actress, graced the event with her presence, her eyes sparkling with excitement for her first horror film in over a decade. But amidst the buzz, one question lingered: what about the missed opportunity to work with the legendary Vilma Santos?
A Missed Connection
The role of Santos’ mother in the film was initially offered to Vilma Santos, a prospect that had thrilled fans. However, fate had other plans. Vilma opted for a different MMFF entry, “Uninvited,” leaving the role to the equally talented Lorna Tolentino.
“Well, of course, at some point, I felt regret,” Judy Ann confessed, her voice tinged with a hint of wistfulness. “Everybody wants to work with Ms. Vilma Santos, the same with Ms. Nora Aunor. They’re the prime stars of the industry. But I believe that if something is not bound to happen, then it will not.”
But Judy Ann, ever the optimist, holds onto hope. “I have faith in what Ate Vi said—that there would be another project meant for us. I’m holding on to that. There will really be one special project for the two of us to work on,” she asserted, a smile lighting up her face.
In a gesture of humility, Vilma personally called Judy Ann to apologize for the missed opportunity. “She didn’t have to, but it shows her humility. She congratulated us, including Ms. LT, who took her place in the film. I’m hats-off to her for that. These things happen in our industry, and you just have to trust God’s plan.”
A Homecoming and a New Beginning
“Espantaho” marks not only Judy Ann’s return to the horror genre but also her comeback to the MMFF after five years. “Working on this project is very exciting for me,” she enthused. “This is my first horror vehicle in 10 years, and being directed by Mr. Chito Roño again is such an honor.”
The film, directed by the maestro of Filipino horror cinema, Chito S. Roño, promises to be a chilling tale of love, betrayal, and mystery. Roño, known for his iconic films like “Feng Shui” and “Sukob,” brings his signature style to “Espantaho,” weaving a narrative that is sure to send shivers down your spine.
Judy Ann expressed her pride in the project, comparing it to Roño’s previous horror classics. “How can you say no to this project?” she remarked, referring to the stellar cast that includes Lorna Tolentino, Chanda Romero, Eugene Domingo, and other prominent names in the industry.
More Than Just Pressure
With the MMFF just around the corner, Judy Ann admitted to feeling the heat. “More than the pressure, it’s the excitement,” she shared. “The movie was emotionally draining to make, but you go home happy knowing you gave your best.”
As for the possibility of bagging the Best Actress award, Judy Ann remains grounded. “It’s hypocrisy to say you don’t want it,” she admitted. “But I leave it to the judges. What matters is we worked hard on this film.”
A Cinematic Triumph
“Espantaho” is more than just a horror film; it’s a testament to the resilience and artistry of Filipino cinema. Quantum Films, the production company behind the movie, celebrates two decades of cinematic excellence with this entry, pushing the boundaries of storytelling and honoring the legacy of Philippine cinema.
Lorna Tolentino, who plays a pivotal role in the film, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity. “I have to thank Vilma Santos for giving me this opportunity and Atty. Joji Alonzo,” she said.
With its storyline, performances, and direction, “Espantaho” is expected to be a standout entry in the golden edition of the MMFF.
