“We saw the need kasi ba parang ang dami nating kino-consume na mga AI verticals, yung mga Chinese drama. Parang we want a vertical series na nagcha-champion ng mga Filipino stories,” director Maki Javier told us during the media launch of KayaFlix, the newest Filipino streaming platform dedicated to vertical, mobile-first storytelling.
For Javier, the opportunity was not simply about creating another streaming service. It was about giving Filipino stories a space in a format that audiences are increasingly familiar with while offering a local alternative to the growing number of vertical dramas coming from overseas.

“Whether it be very complex na mga kwento or mababaw lang na kwento just because you want to watch and so ‘yun ‘yung challenge na tine-take ni Kaya ngayon na walang ma-alienate na mga taong manonood kasi varied siya eh,” he added. That variety is at the heart of KayaFlix, a proudly Filipino streaming platform created to bring original stories to audiences through the vertical format designed specifically for smartphones.
Rather than simply adapting traditional television programs to a smaller screen, KayaFlix develops stories with mobile viewing in mind. Its programming combines the emotional pull of the Filipino teleserye with the fast-paced, accessible nature of digital entertainment. And the stories are deliberately varied.
“Merong mockumentary si Kaya na about precolonial transfeminism and land grabbing pero meron din siyang romcom lang so magkakaiba talaga siya. Meron para sa lahat,” Javier said. With genres and subjects ranging from socially relevant and complex narratives to lighter romantic comedies, KayaFlix hopes to attract viewers with different interests and viewing habits.
The platform currently has 300 episodes in its library and more to be added in the coming days. The audiences are offered a substantial collection of Filipino content to explore.
Giving Filipino Stories a Home
KayaFlix was born from Javier’s experience as a judge at a student film festival at Bulacan State University. Impressed by the creativity and craftsmanship of the student filmmakers, he was left with a question after the festival ended — where would audiences be able to watch these stories afterward? Many student films receive screenings within universities or festivals but eventually disappear from public view. Javier saw an opportunity to create a platform where these works, along with other Filipino productions, could continue reaching audiences.
“Our stories deserve a home” became the central belief behind KayaFlix. The platform aims not only to produce and distribute original Filipino vertical series but also to provide opportunities for emerging writers, directors, actors, filmmakers, and student storytellers. Its mission specifically includes connecting young Filipino creatives with audiences beyond academic institutions and giving their work a longer life.
Filipino Stories for the Mobile Generation
The rise of mobile viewing has changed the way audiences consume entertainment. Phones have become a primary screen for many viewers, whether they are commuting, waiting for a ride, taking a lunch break, or simply relaxing at home.
KayaFlix is built around that behavior. Its vertical series are created specifically for smartphone viewing, with fast-paced storytelling and episodes designed to encourage audiences to keep watching. The platform also seeks to retain the qualities that have long made Filipino entertainment popular: emotional storytelling, relatable characters, memorable dialogue, family, love, humor, and everyday experiences.
For Javier, embracing a new format does not mean abandoning the heart of Filipino storytelling. “Technology continues to change the way we watch, but it should never change the heart of Filipino storytelling. Our goal is to preserve that heart while presenting it in a format that today’s audiences naturally embrace,” he said.

KayaFlix officially launched to the public on August 15, following an August 12 grand launch and early-access event for members of the press, creators, influencers, and industry partners.
The platform is available for ₱199, reduced from its original ₱249 price, and offers audiences access to its growing collection of original Filipino series.
Its long-term vision extends beyond entertainment consumption. KayaFlix aims to become a leading destination for Filipino vertical dramas while discovering emerging storytellers from the provinces and regional communities and expanding the audience for independent Filipino productions.
For student filmmakers in particular, the platform hopes to become a launchpad where work created for academic requirements can find a life beyond the classroom.
The idea is simple. Filipino stories should not have to disappear after a festival screening, thesis defense, or limited release. They can find another audience—and, through KayaFlix, another home.
With a lot of episodes already in its library and more stories in development, KayaFlix is betting that Filipino audiences are ready for a different way of watching local entertainment. And if Javier’s vision is any indication, that future will not be limited to one kind of story.
