LA Santos gains newfound respect for OFWs through Sinag Maynila 2024 entry ‘Maple Leaf Dreams’
Multi-awarded actor LA Santos’ immersion into the lives of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in Canada for his role in “Maple Leaf Dreams” left a lasting impression on him. It gave him a deeper appreciation for their sacrifices and the challenges they face while living far from home. “Nabago talaga po yung tingin ko sa OFWs kasi yung ginawa na po namin yung movie, hindi ko na naramdaman parang artista ako. Parang totoong naramdaman kong natatrabaho na ako at totoong OFW na ako,” LA shared, highlighting the transformative impact of his experience. This profound understanding shaped his portrayal of Macky, a restaurant manager who migrates to Canada with his girlfriend in search of a better life.
A heartwarming family drama about a couple’s pursuit of a better life in Canada, “Maple Leaf Dreams” showcases LA’s shining performance. The film follows Macky (LA Santos) and Molly (Kira Balinger) as they navigate the complexities of adapting to a new culture and working hard to achieve their dreams. LA’s portrayal of Macky is imbued with a deep respect for OFWs, echoing their sentiments, “Kaya parang dahil sa experience ko rin, mas naging grabe yung respect ko po at talagang tumaas tingin ko para sa mga OFW.”
Dedication to his craft is evident in LA’s preparation for the role. To authentically portray blue-collar workers, LA and Kira immersed themselves in the lives of ordinary Filipinos by working in lower-class establishments. LA spent a week washing dishes and waiting tables in a local eatery, gaining firsthand experience of the challenges faced by many OFWs.
The role of Macky represents the countless Filipinos who leave their homeland in search of better opportunities for their families. Meeting OFWs in Canada deepened LA’s understanding of their sacrifices and strengthened his resolve to do justice to their stories. This sentiment resonated deeply with LA, who recognized the unique bond Filipinos have with their country, “At talaga mas masaya na po dito kahit sabihin natin mas maganda sa ibang bansa, mas masaya pa rin naman talaga dito.”
LA’s connection to the film extends beyond acting; he also lends his voice to the theme song, “Tayo Lang.” This heartfelt ballad, with nearly a million streams on Spotify, resonates with the film’s emotional core.
“Maple Leaf Dreams” is proof to LA’s growing talent and dedication to his craft. It showcases his ability to portray complex characters with depth and authenticity. As the film continues its run in Metro Manila and prepares for its nationwide and Canadian release, LA’s star continues to rise.
