It was a reunion of sorts for award-winning and seasoned actors Jaclyn Jose and Coco Martin. For Brillante Mendoza’s entry to the first-ever Summer Metro Manila Film Festival, Jaclyn and Coco were joined by Julio Diaz, actor-politician Sen. Lito Lapid, Mercedes Cabral, and Gladys Reyes. Shaina Magdayao and Joseph Marco had a special participation.

The story? Rafael (Coco Martin) comes from a well-to-do family, and carelessly got into fatal vehicular accident that caused someone’s death on the way home from the market with his dad (Lito Lapid). Fear of the consequences led them to cover up the case. Guilt started to build up as they started living a lie.

First shown internationally, Apag had a different ending in Korea. Without spoiling anything, the ending in its local version was Coco’s idea. Reactions to the ending are mixed as some say they foresaw it but to others, it came as a surprise. One thing’s for sure, it’s a conversation starter.

I am also sure of how this movie capitalized on its casting. Each actor was given his or her time to shine. Coco effectively veered away from his usual Cardo Dalisay and Batang Quiapo vibe and you would forget that Gladys Reyes is an (and my generation’s most) iconic onscreen villain. Coco’s and Gladys’ characters called for empathy and compassion, even in moments you wouldn’t want to feel it. Mercedes was consistent in keeping her character mysterious and intriguing all throughout while Jaclyn and Lito delivered their roles without histrionics.

Aside from the stellar performances, the real star of the show was Kampampangan cuisine. I could hear the silent oohs and aahs whenever food was being served. It was a visual feast, literally and figuratively.
