Romantic comedies often follow familiar formulas, but Pocket Media Productions’ Meg & Ryan offers a refreshing twist by pairing two actors you wouldn’t immediately expect to click— JC Santos and Rhian Ramos— and yet, they deliver a chemistry that feels natural and effortless. Directed by Catherine Camarillo, the film features a love story between two individuals from completely different worlds, bound by fate (and risky choices!).

Rhian takes on the role of Meg Zamonte, a rich, wild, and fun-loving woman carrying heavy emotional baggage. After losing her mother and living alone with a strained relationship with her father, Meg copes with her pain through alcohol—until she enters rehab and begins her journey as a recovering alcoholic. Her life takes a surprising turn when she meets Ryan Cañete (JC), a 35-year-old virgin whose conservative upbringing and moral values have made him the butt of jokes at work, often mocked for being “too clean” or even suspected of being gay. Raised in a warm and loving family, with memories of his late father shaping his worldview, Ryan is the complete opposite of Meg.
The story takes off when a spontaneous, drunken night leads to an unexpected one-night stand. What was supposed to be a fleeting encounter becomes the beginning of a complicated yet charming love story, as fate brings them back together. But love is never easy, and Meg’s personal struggles and unresolved issues threaten to tear apart what could have been a beautiful connection. The film leaves viewers wondering: Can love truly heal, or will the past always get in the way?
What makes Meg & Ryan work is its casting. At first glance, the pairing of JC and Rhian doesn’t scream instant chemistry and that was the magic. Onscreen, they own their characters and every shared moment, building a believable romantic tension that doesn’t rely solely on the tastefully done intimate scenes. Their connection feels real, even in the quiet glances and exchanges. JC, on one hand, transformed into a completely new persona—awkward and convicing, far from his usual roles, and he performed it with conviction. His dynamic with Ces Quesada who plays his mother, is equally heartwarming, their scenes radiate authenticity, making you believe in the closeness of their mother-son bond.
Rhian, on the other hand, delivers a raw and layered performance as Meg. Her scenes with Cris Villanueva, who portrays her father, are believable and nuanced, despite the smaller age gap in real life. You feel the tension, the pain, and the unspoken love in their estranged father-daughter relationship. One standout moment is a daring yet tastefully shot sequence where Rhian walks naked across the street – a shocking visual that reflects Meg’s vulnerability and recklessness, handled with Direk Catherine’s sensitivity.
Supporting the leads is Poca or Warren Osinaga, a content creator who makes a delightful acting debut in a supporting role. Though his screen time and punchlines are few, his comedic timing lands every time, earning genuine laugh-out-loud moments among the viewers inside the cinema that night.
Another highlight of the film is its musical scoring. The use of the OPM classic “Torete,” reimagined in a fresh and emotionally resonant version by rising band Better Days, beautifully complements the film’s most heartfelt and intimate moments. The song elevates the scenes and the hopeful love story unfolding onscreen.
While the story leaves room for some tightening (There is one part I wish to be tweaked), the film still succeeds in crafting a kilig-filled romantic journey with a surprise pairing that pays off. Direk Catherine’s careful direction, tasteful cinematography, and the actors’ committed performances make Meg and Ryan a charming watch that proves love stories can still surprise us.
