Random Review: ‘Uninvited’ lives up to its inviting trailers, delivers justice and catharsis
Stepping out of the cinema after at the red carpet premiere of Uninvited, I felt a surge of different emotions. Disturbed yet strangely satisfied, I knew I had just witnessed something powerful. The movie, a collaboration among Mentorque Productions, Project 8 Projects, and Warner Bros., and directed by Dan Villegas, had been generating a lot of attention since it started promotions, mainly due to its star-studded cast. Seeing legends like Vilma Santos and Aga Muhlach share the screen with this generation’s award-winning star Nadine Lustre is a rare treat, and the different trailer versions promised a thrilling ride.
Honestly, I usually avoid movies that are into dark themes of revenge and violence. But something about “Uninvited” was inviting. The film offered a unique experience – a journey into the heart of a mother’s love and vengeance that was somehow both unsettling and therapeutic.
Just one night
The story centers on Lilia Capistrano (Vilma Santos), who adopts the name Eva Candelaria to infiltrate the lavish world of billionaire Guilly Vega (Aga Muhlach). Eva’s motive is clear: revenge for the abduction and abuse of her daughter Lily (Gabby Padilla) ten years prior, a crime she believes Guilly masterminded. What follows is a tense, action-packed night where Eva systematically targets those connected to her daughter’s case.
Vilma Santos, truly the Star for All Seasons, delivered as expected. Her portrayal of a mother consumed by grief and driven by a fierce desire for justice was both heartbreaking and inspiring. The way she conveyed Eva’s vulnerability and rage was simply extraordinary.
Breaking expectations
Aga Muhlach, known as the country’s OG heartthrob and for his roles in romantic and dramatic movies, surprised me with his portrayal of the billionaire. This was a side of Aga I haven’t seen before – a darker, more complex character with disturbing undertones. His performance showcased his wide range as an actor.
Nadine Lustre also delivered a noteworthy performance with her understated and nuanced portrayal. Hers was a contrast to the intense drama unfolding around her, proving her growth and maturity as an actress.
More thank just the leads
The supporting cast was equally strong. Gabby Padilla gave a particularly impactful performance, and actors like Elijah Canlas, Ron Angeles, Ketchup Eusebio, Gio Alvarez, Cholo Barretto, R.K. Bagatsing, and Mylene Dizon brought authenticity to their roles, enriching the story without overshadowing the main characters.
A shared experience
What truly made this screening memorable was the audience’s reaction. While some parts are admittedly predictable, the theater still erupted in surprise, cheers, and applause during the most intense moments. People were openly rooting for Eva and her quest for justice. It was an unusual and powerful experience to be part of such a collective emotional response.
The film’s visual language also deserves praise. The cinematography beautifully captured the dark and sad mood, letting us into a world of grief, anger, and the pursuit of justice. The use of muted colors, close-ups, and camera movements heightened the tension and amplified the impact of each scene.
Beyond revenge
“Uninvited” is an exploration of loss, justice, and the strength of the human spirit with the exceptional performances of the country’s biggest names. I highly recommend this movie, even to those who usually avoid darker themes. You just have to be prepared for some graphic scenes. This is your sign to gatecrash the party!
Uninvited is now showing in cinemas.
