“Kapag pinalusot natin sila, wala tayong pinagkaiba.”

This is one of the haunting lines that struck me while watching Salvageland, a film that delivered more than entertainment. It served as a confrontation. The film forces us to look straight at an uncomfortable reality that many of us would rather ignore or set aside.

The performances of Richard Gomez, Elijah Canlas, and Mon Confiado are impressive because they gave life to a truth so raw, so familiar, that it stings. We are victims of a vicious cycle in this country, and Salvageland uses art as a mirror, revealing what must be corrected. It does not whisper. It slaps us awake. At least, for me, that’s how I felt.

The actors were important ingredients to the artful concoction. Even director Lino Cayetano, after a special screening with cast members and production staff, expressed his appreciation for his actors.

Richard Gomez rekindles his brilliance

After a long acting hiatus, Richard Gomez returns with quiet yet undeniable brilliance. Salvageland reminds us exactly why he is who he is — an actor whose depth, restraint, and presence speak louder than words. The performance feels like an ability long kept hidden, finally unleashed again.

Elijah Canlas becomes a symbol of hope

Elijah Canlas, one of the finest of his generation, delivered another memorable performance. In this film, he becomes a symbol of hope and moral clarity, a reminder of what the youth can represent if given the chance — integrity, courage, and possibility. His portrayal inspires and challenges us, viewers, to reflect on what we would do in the same situation.

Mon Confiado personifies consistency

As expected, Mon Confiado excels in his antagonistic role. He was measured, chilling, and effective. His performance is strengthened by McCoy de Leon, whose growth as an actor is highly noticeable. After his standout moments in FPJ’s Batang Quiapo with Coco Martin on primetime TV, McCoy once again proves that he is capable of depth and nuance.

Angela Morena and Cindy Miranda Step Forward

Angela Morena and Cindy Miranda, known for daring roles on Vivamax, are given space here to showcase their range and they do so with strength and sincerity. Their performances serve as a reminder that these actresses have more to offer when given the right material.

A Tight Film with a Strong Impact

The movie may be quick in pacing, but it fully immerses you. You feel like you’re part of the situation, part of the problem, part of the moral crossroads. It makes you ask yourself, “What would I do if I were in Elijah’s and Richard’s positions in the movie?”

Set in a fictional town near Metro Manila against the volcanic landscape of Mt. Pinatubo, Salvageland follows a veteran police officer and his newbie son who must defend their station when a crime syndicate is creating mess. What unfolds is a violent confrontation that forces them to choose between survival and doing what is right.

At its heart, the movie is a battle where one has to choose between good and evil, fear and courage, self-preservation and justice. These themes feel painfully relevant in our current times where issues of corruption and abuse of power surround our government.

— Lino S. Cayetano, Salvageland director

When asked if it was intentional that the film ends with a hint of a possible sequel, Direk Lino said, “Sa akin, bukas siya. Pero ‘yung pagkawala nung isang character sa ending, sa akin, more than nagsesenyales na magkaka-part two, parang simbolismo na ang kasamaan hindi nawawala kaya ‘yung pakikipaglaban natin hindi puwedeng isang beses lang. Kung kahapon mabuti tayo puwedeng ngayon masama na. Paalala na kailangan araw-araw natin makibaka at ipaglaban ang tama.”

A Film Our Leaders and protectors Need to See

Salvageland should be mandatory viewing not just for ordinary citizens but especially for those in power, those tasked and paid to protect us and help improve our lives. There is inspiration here, a call to rise above the corruption and apathy that plague our systems.

Directed by Lino S. Cayetano, and written by Shugo Praico and John Carlo Pacala, the film is top-billed by Richard Gomez, Elijah Canlas, and Mon Confiado.

Beyond the powerhouse cast, what stands out is its courage. This is cinema with intention — a reminder, a warning, and a plea.

Because if we let the wrong things pass, Elijah’s character Jules is right, wala tayong pinagkaiba.

Salvageland is NOW SHOWING.
