Staying Safe Online: Globe champions the fight against content piracy and cybercrime
In today’s digital age, even the safety of your home doesn’t guarantee protection online. The rise of internet connectivity and mobile device usage has made Filipinos more vulnerable to cyberthreats—especially when browsing pirate sites.

A recent study commissioned by the Motion Picture Association (MPA) and conducted by Dr. Paul Watters of Macquarie University reveals alarming risks. Filipinos are 33 times more likely to encounter cyberthreats on pirate websites compared to legitimate platforms. This highlights the urgent need for stronger legislation to combat piracy in the Philippines.
Why Piracy is More Dangerous Than You Think
Pirate websites aren’t just a source of free entertainment—they are breeding grounds for cybercrime. These sites make it easy for criminals to steal personal data, putting users at risk of identity theft and fraud. According to Watters, high internet usage in the Philippines makes the country a prime target for these threats.
Unfortunately, many consumers remain unaware of the dangers. Watters emphasized the need for stricter compliance measures and greater public awareness. He advocates site-blocking as a baseline solution to curb piracy and its associated risks.
Globe’s Commitment to a Safer Digital Space
Globe Telecom, a long-time advocate for digital safety, is calling for Congress to amend the outdated Intellectual Property Code to allow site-blocking and better enforcement against content piracy.
“At Globe, we champion a digital world that is safe and empowering for all Filipinos. This study underscores the urgency of passing legislation to protect consumers, especially our youth, from the hidden dangers of pirate sites,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe’s Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer.
She urged Congress to act quickly: “We need this legislation before the current congressional session ends, to avoid further delays and safeguard the digital well-being of our nation.”
Celebrities Speak Out
The fight against piracy isn’t just about cyberthreats—it’s also about protecting the livelihood of countless Filipinos in the entertainment industry. During a fireside chat moderated by TV host Pia Guanio, Globe’s ambassadors—Edu Manzano, Shaina Magdayao, and Kim Atienza—shared their insights.
Edu Manzano: A Legacy of Loss
Manzano, actor and former head of the Optical Media Board, recalled a time when the Philippine film industry produced over 200 films annually. Today, that number has dropped to less than 30 due to piracy.
“It was heartbreaking to see over 9,000 workers lose their jobs. To this day, the industry has not fully recovered,” he said. Manzano stressed the importance of legislation that keeps pace with rapidly advancing technology.
Shaina Magdayao: Piracy Stifles Creativity
Magdayao highlighted how piracy discourages investments in the entertainment sector, limiting opportunities for Filipino creatives.
“Show business is a business. If there’s no return on investment for producers, they won’t fund projects or nurture emerging talents. How can the industry grow if no one invests in it?” she asked.
She added, “I always boast about the beauty of the Philippines and the talent of our people at international festivals. But piracy is holding us back from achieving global recognition and success.”
Globe’s #PlayItRight Campaign
Globe has long been at the forefront of anti-piracy advocacy through its #PlayItRight campaign. The initiative raises public awareness about the dangers of piracy and calls for stronger protection of the Philippine creative industry, which is valued at Php 1.6 billion.
As a member of the AVIA Coalition Against Piracy and the Video Coalition of the Philippines, Globe actively supports legislative efforts to empower site-blocking and safeguard the digital space.
The Bottom Line
Piracy doesn’t just hurt industries—it puts consumers at risk. With cyberthreats on the rise, it’s crucial for the government, industry leaders, and the public to work together to protect the digital space. Globe’s call to action is clear: Support legislation that prioritizes safety, creativity, and sustainability.
