Then and Now: Alden Richards in YES! Magazine’s ‘The Next Big Thing’ List in 2011
YES! magazine and GMA executives got it right almost five years ago when they included today’s phenomenal star and Pambansang Bae Alden Richards in the magazine’s Next Big Thing list. In the April 2011 issue of YES!, the top entertainment magazine featured the list of stars media giants ABS-CBN and GMA-7 were betting on for the next three years. It may have taken a little longer than three years for Alden to reach the peak of his career, but he really made it big time in 2015. Thanks to his Eat Bulaga exposure and accidental pairing with Maine “Yaya Dub” Mendoza in the show’s Kalyeserye segment, the Starstruck reject is one of the biggest names in the industry today. In fact, Alden is currently tagged as the country’s Endorsement King with his growing list of brand ambassadorships. Successful mall shows, top record sales (his latest album just reached 5x platinum status), awards and citations, box-office results, numerous magazine features, and record breaking TV ratings and social media impact are also proof of his current showbiz status.
Ms. Lilybeth Rasonable of GMA-7 told YES! in 2011 that Alden may be new but he conducted himself in front of the camera and everyone like he’s been an artista for so long. She described the Alakdana leading man back then as self-confident, intelligent, articulate, and well-bred. It was also mentioned in the interview that Alden reminded Rasonable of the young John Lloyd Cruz in terms of his looks and charm.
YES! magazine ended its article by saying that “Most newbies have to be trained to become stars. Others seem to be ready-made idols. The Kapuso network seems to have lucked out finding one of the latter in Alden.” We couldn’t agree more. Alden Richards did become today’s Big Thing.
