Don’t be fooled by the little girl in the red dress with matching bows in her hair, light makeup on her face, a plushie tucked under her arm, and one hand tightly holding on to her mother.
Eight-year-old Jilean Shain Ocmeja Taghap—better known as “Shin Shin,” may appear timid and soft-spoken offstage, but the moment she steps in front of a microphone, she transforms into a performer with the confidence, power, and emotional depth of someone far beyond her years.
The young singer from Alejawan, Jagna, Bohol left us in awe as she performed Yano’s Banal na Aso, Santong Kabayo and Sampaguita’s Nosi Ba Lasi. Her amazing vocal range, effortless control, and commanding stage presence made it hard to believe such a powerful voice could come from someone so young.
It is no surprise that she has earned the nickname “small but terrible.”
Music has been part of Shin Shin’s life almost from the very beginning. According to her family, she was already singing Disney’s Let It Go at just two years old. By the age of three, she had begun figuring out melodies on a piano app by ear, eventually teaching herself songs without formal instruction. Today, she not only sings but also plays both the piano and violin, displaying a natural musicality that continues to impress even seasoned musicians.
She first performed before a large audience at only four years old. Recognizing her extraordinary gift, her parents enrolled her at Jabez Music Center, where she formally studied voice, piano, and violin. Throughout her training, she consistently excelled in recitals and repeatedly received the Best Recitalist award.
Competitions soon followed and so did the victories.
Starting in kindergarten, Shin Shin became a consistent champion in singing contests. She won the GSP Got Talent 2024, eventually becoming District, Area, and Provincial Champion. She also emerged as the Provincial Grand Champion in the Bohol Association of Private Schools Elementary Administrators (BAPSEA) Singing Competition for the Preschool Division before winning the Provincial Championship again in the Primary Division the following year. Most recently, on July 6, 2026, she added another title to her growing list of achievements after being crowned Grand Champion of Alta Citta’s Kiddie Singing Star in Bohol.
Beyond all these, it was a simple upload by her mother, not a planned publicity campaign, that introduced Shin Shin to millions.
In December 2025, her performance of “Banal na Aso, Santong Kabayo” went viral after her mother posted the video on TikTok while simply experimenting with video effects before saving it. At the time, the family had only a modest following and had no intention of creating viral content.
The clip exploded online, amassing more than 14.1 million views and over 1.6 million likes on TikTok alone. The performance gained even wider attention after content creator Nephi Acaling featured and reviewed it on Facebook, generating another 7.7 million views. Soon, more creators began sharing her performance, amazed that such a petite child could deliver a voice so powerful, mature, and emotionally moving.
One compliment has followed Shin Shin wherever she performs.
“Kinikilabutan ako kapag kumakanta siya.”
(“She gives me goosebumps whenever she sings.”)
Despite the growing attention, fame has not changed the little girl behind the microphone.
After her performance, she immediately returned to being the playful child everyone had met before she went onstage. While waiting for her turn, she happily played with her plush toy. When she was called to perform, she switched almost instantly from playtime to performance mode—without hesitation, nervousness, or fuss.
Her mother shared that maintaining balance has always been important for their family. While Shin Shin continues to develop her remarkable talent, she is encouraged to enjoy childhood, play, study, and simply have fun. Singing is never treated as pressure or obligation but as something she genuinely loves.
That love becomes obvious whenever anyone asks her what interests her most.
Without missing a beat, her answer is always the same:
“Music.”
Today, Shin Shin is a Grade 3 student at Child and Arts Academy, Inc. She is the eldest of three children and continues to refine her craft through vocal coaching under Froilan Canlas, a respected mentor known for coaching contestants from Tawag ng Tanghalan. Her musical gift also runs in the family, inherited from her mother and grandmother, who were both singers during their younger years.
Though she has already captured millions of hearts online, Shin Shin’s dreams remain refreshingly simple. One of her biggest wishes is to visit Hong Kong Disneyland. She once asked her mother with childlike sincerity, “Mama, how many times do I need to sing before we can afford to go to Hong Kong Disneyland?”
It is a reminder that behind the viral videos, championship trophies, and standing ovations is still a little girl who loves to play, dreams big, and simply wants to sing.
