Some things never change. And when onscreen chemistry clicks, it outlasts time and real-life status.
When a clip of Alfred Vargas and Diana Zubiri resurfaced online under the title “Aquil, I love You!—Danaya,” it reminded a new generation and got longtime fans excited about how the DanAquil pairing captured hearts back in 2005. The short video, lifted from their Encantadia scenes, quickly trended and was given virtual hearts by netizens. This drew a set of positive reactions that proved romantic sparks onscreen can outlast years, marriages, and new chapters in life.

Alfred and Diana’s partnership began at GMA, where Alfred played Aquil, commander of the Lirean army, and Diana portrayed Danaya, one of the four Sang’gres. The Danaya-Aquil chemistry carried through the series’ continuing arcs, including “Etheria: Ang Ika-Limang Kaharian ng Encantadia” (2005–2006) and the original saga’s closing chapter, “Encantadia: Pag-ibig Hanggang Wakas” (2006). The loveteam’s popularity prompted GMA to cast them together beyond fantasy drama: they hosted the reality show “Ang Pagbabago” (July 10, 2006) and co-starred in the 2006 comedy film “I Wanna Be Happy” (Seiko Films), directed by Jose Javier Reyes, alongside Eddie Garcia and Gloria Romero. Their earlier collaboration also included the film Liberated (2003), directed by Mac Alejandre.
Although they did not reunite as a pair in the 2016 Encantadia reboot, Diana returned as LilaSari while Alfred appeared later as Amarro. In Etheria, Alfred also played Amarro, the gentle father of Aquil, half-Hathor and half-Diwata.

The Encantadia run also marked Alfred’s return to GMA-7 at that time as he would later go back to ABS-CBN in 2011 before focusing on a political career. Still, for many viewers, the original cast members’ moments are the ones they miss most. One said online, “My favorite encantadia the best tlaga, ito yong mga original nakakamis silang panoorin…my fave scene kakilig, love it.”

The viral “Aquil, I love you!—Danaya” clip reignited that nostalgia. Netizens posted comments that read like a love letter to the original pairing. They said:
“Dito ako kinilig eh. nag i love you si sangre danaya.”
“Yan gusto kong loveteam dati e.”
“Ayyhiiiee tong Aquil tlga inaabangan q sa ENGCANTADIA [sic] dati.”
“Gusto ko talaga yong dating sangre…ang galing talaga nla idol na idol ko vla.”
“My favorite “encantadia” the best tlaga, ito yong mga Original nakakamis Silang panoorin…my fav scene kakilig, love it.”
Fans’ longing for a revival of that particular onscreen magic raises a familiar question — can a well-loved pair be remade for today’s audience? For their part, both Alfred and Diana have happily moved on in life, married with children, yet footage proves that certain moments on screen retain their charge.

Alfred himself has expressed gratitude and surprise at the renewed attention. He welcomed the appreciation, noting the show’s impact. He said, “Ang tagal na nitong Encantadia at nakagugulat na hanggang ngayon, may mga kinikilig ni pa rin sa amin.” He admitted he was surprised when he was tagged, “Nagulat nga ako nang may nag-tag, nagpadala sa akin niyong video. Nakatutuwa na trending siya.” Alfred also acknowledged the personal bond that remains between him and Diana and the possibility of working together again. “Maganda ang naging working relationship namin ni Diana at we remain friends until now. Hope makagawa uli kami ng movie o series,” the actor-politician happily shared.

The nostalgia train that the DanAquil clip is part-sentimentality and part-acknowledgment of craft. When actors find a rhythm — the look, timing, and unspoken communication, it can create scenes that feel timeless. For fans who grew up watching the Sang’gres, and for newcomers discovering the series via viral snippets, the chemistry between Alfred and Diana is a reminder that some onscreen moments refuse to fade.
If the calls for another team-up grow louder, producers and the pair themselves may weigh family commitments and careers against the undeniable affection of the audience. Until then, that little clip will continue to do what great scenes do best — transport viewers back to a moment when two characters (and the actors who played them) showered us with kilig.
