In case you’re wondering what the viral Asoka makeup trend is, Kim Atienza a.k.a. Kuya Kim gave us the answer on nightly newscast 24 Oras. He explained that the Asoka makeup challenge, although showcasing the rich and colorful Indian culture, did not originate in India. It was started by an Indonesian content creator, utilizing the Indian song “San Sanana” from the 2001 Bollywood film “Asoka.” The film itself is the namesake of this viral trend that makes use of South Asian makeup techniques and smooth, quick transitions.

The Asoka makeup trend has found a Filipino twist with Angeline Quinto’s “Piliin Mo Ang Pilipinas” as the soundtrack. Celebrities like Alex Gonzaga, Donnalyn Bartolome, and Marian Rivera embraced this localized version, including Angeline herself who used it to reveal her baby’s gender.

Vice Ganda, top trendsetter and one of the country’s major influencers, teased his take on social media, generating anticipation among his followers. He has been jokingly doing the moves on noontime show It’s Showtime, expressing how many people have been prodding him to come up with his version. It did not take long for him to give in.

“Ayan na po magpapasa na po ako ng assignment mamayang 7pm,” Vice posted on X and Instagram.

His final video exceeded expectations, not just showcasing his makeup skills, but also highlighting pressing national concerns like Manila’s traffic congestion, the controversial PUV phaseout, inadequate public transportation, the Torre de Manila obstructing the Rizal Monument, and the contentious Captain’s Peak Garden and Resort in Bohol’s Chocolate Hills. To give a balanced take, Vice gave viewers a glimpse of the beautiful sights and destinations within the country before shifting to major societal issues. He did not waste the opportunity to entertain and inform, promoting social awareness among his fans and followers.

Since the audio was removed on TikTok, where Vice initially targeted to launch the video, he reposted it on Facebook and Instagram, too.

Vice’s heartfelt message in the end is touching and goosebumps-inducing when viewed with audio. He stated, “Kahit mahirap kang ipaglaban, pinipili pa rin kita, Pilipinas.” (Even though you’re hard to fight for, I still choose you, Philippines). This resonated deeply with viewers who have been leaving positive comments on the post. Vice Ganda left a lasting impact with this one, proving his ability to entertain and provoke thought. In true Vice Ganda fashion, PAK!
