VJ Mendoza is meant to be in showbiz. How fate brought him to where he is today is proof to that.

Through the Bedan Paskuhan in 2012, fate introduced VJ to the entertainment industry. Back then, he was still a nursing student. He received a business card from someone who also urged him to try out for commercial auditions. The rest is history.

In 2013, he appeared in his very first television ad for Cebuana Lhuillier alongside pop star royalty Sarah Geronimo-Guidicelli.

Vicente Mendoza Jr., or VJ for short, eventually became his screen name when he entered showbiz.

Just the 3 of Us, a major movie from Star Cinema, starring Jennylyn Mercado and John Lloyd Cruz, became VJ’s first firm. He portrayed a physician in the 2016 project. The indie film Esprit de Corps (2014), an adaptation of Auraeus Solito’s play of the same name from the 1980s about the game of seduction and ranks in the ROTC, provided him with his “baptism of fire” into the world of filmmaking. He played the role of Pvt. Bisoy.

In 2017 he shot Lovely Sundays, an international film shot entirely in Taiwan.

Some of his notable appearances in films were in Kubot: The Aswang Chronicles 2 (2014), Heneral Luna (2015), Barcelona: A Love Untold (2016), My Ex and Whys (2017), Kung Paano Siya Nawala (2018), Born Beautiful (2019), Last Fool Show (2019), Isa Pa with Feelings (2019), Culion, a MMFF 2019 entry (2019), Big Night (2021), and Ngayon Kaya (2022).

What many people do not know, VJ is a registered nurse. But, as fate would have it, he carved his place in showbiz. “Dinala talaga ako dito,” he said. As acting seems to really be written in the stars for him, an all-nurses cast was formed for a film project in 2019.

In the project directed by Lemuel Lorca, Mendoza is the lead character Anna‘s childhood friend, who also has feelings for her. He is the town’s ‘habal’ driver.

Although though he doesn’t play a nurse in the movie, he is thankful to have collaborated with other nurses who acted in Siglo ng Kalinga, which was based on the life of PNA co-founder Anastacia Giron-Tupas and the valiant efforts of Filipino nightingales.

Mendoza admitted that Alfred’s persona taught him how to be an ordinary person like the people they encountered while filming in Mauban, Quezon.

Mendoza referred to being a nurse as a “thankless job,” thus by accepting the movie, he is helping to convince people that nurses are just as deserving of respect as other professions.

He now understands the sacrifices made by nurses and how hard they tried to protect others from COVID-19.

His job in the entertainment industry has benefited from the discipline he developed during his nursing studies.

“Whenever there’s a call time, I am prompt and ready with my lines. It’s something na nadala ko sa industry na ginagalawan ko now. Pursuing nursing has given me a sense of respect for other people’s time and professionalism.

“Dumarating ako sa set na ready sa anumang kailangan sa eksena.”

With over 80 commercials under his belt before successfully crossing over into television and film, VJ’s TV credits include ABS-CBN’s 2019 Pamilya Ko as Daks and the recently concluded Mano Po Legacy: Family Fortune as Kervin this year. He also headlined the BL Series Inn Love under the direction of Rodel Mercado.

VJ is set to star in MavX Productions‘ Ang Pangarap Kong Oskars with Joross Gamboa, Paolo Contis, and Kate Alejandrino. Currently, he’s seen in the hit series Ang Babae sa Likod ng Facemask online. He recently wrapped a guest role on the Hollywood series Almost Paradise.

Be grounded. Be kind. And learn to perfect the art of pakikisama with everyone you work with. These are the valuable lessons VJ wishes to impart younger actors who aspire to get into the business.
