This coming Summer Metro Manila Film Festival, viewers are in for a musical treat in the form of film as they witness the journey of one of the country’s most revered OPM icons – Rey Valera. “Kahit Maputi Na Ang Buhok Ko” (The Music of Rey Valera) is about the life and career of the country’s famous composer and singer.

Valera selected ten of his OPM hits such as “Kahit Maputi Na Ang Buhok Ko,” “Malayo Pa ang Umaga,” “Ako Si Superman,” “Pangako Sa’Yo,” “Mr. DJ,” “Maging Sino Ka Man,” “Tayong Dalawa,” “Kung Tayo’y Magkakalayo,” and “Kung Kailangan Mo Ako” to create a tapestry of the human condition, including collages of some of the people he experienced in his life and reflections on the stories which characterize the Filipino identity. Since this is about the journey of Rey Valera, of his life and career, the film is told in different segments that admire his selected top hits. Within the film, there are segment tributes to the start of the journey of Sharon Cuneta and tribute to the late Rico J Puno.

Ramon Khino “RK” Bagatsing played the character of Valera. Joining him in the cast are Aljur Abrenica, Ricco Barrera, Gelli de Belen, Josh de Guzman, Christopher de Leon, Jenine Desiderio, Meg Imperial, Ronnie Lazaro, Gian Magdanggal, Carlo Mendoza, Ara Mina, Arlene Muhlach, Pekto Nascua, Eric Nicolas, Dennis Padilla, Epy Quizon, Arman Reyes, Ariel Rivera, Ricky Rivero, Rosanna Roces, Lloyd Sarmartino, Shira Tweg, Lou Veloso, and Gardo Versoza.

I would say that the cast played a huge part in giving us, the audience, a better understanding of Valera’s journey. The actors effectively gave life to their characters. I had an appreciation for Valera’s drive to write his songs and pursue his dreams. He was also right when he said that the film was executed as he imagined because the director of this film, Direk Joven Tan, is also a music composer.

What I appreciate about this film is that those like me who may not be part of the generation that witnessed the launch of his singles will get to appreciate Rey Valera and his ups and downs in the musical industry. The presentation has a documentary-type of storytelling that still remains Gen Z-friendly. This is recommended for everyone, especially to those who aspire to pursue music in the local scene. You will hopefully gain the inspiration and motivation to chase after your dreams.

“Kahit Maputi Na Ang Buhok Ko” is produced by Saranggola Media and directed by Direk Joven Tan. This will start screening in cinemas this April 8. – Sandy Cagurangan
