Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle was elected in Rome as the new president of Caritas Internationalis. Tagle who had majority of the votes (91 out of 133 in the confedaration) is the first Asian to hold the highest position in Caritas.
“Thank you for your trust. I’m limited in my capacities but with all of you, with the love that Jesus has poured into our hearts and in the name of all of the poor people in the world, I accept this election,” says Tagle.
Caritas is the helping hand of the Catholic Church worldwide, while reaching out to the poor, marginalized, and excluded regardless of race or religion. Their main guiding principles are justice, dignity, solidarity and stewardship.
