I couldn’t help but laugh and cry at so many heartwarming moments during yesterday’s screening of Korean movie Rebound. It’s a mix of two things Filipinos love — Korean oppas and basketball! What a perfect combination. And boy, did it not disappoint. 🙂 Fellow viewers and I at the screening were laughing out loud and clapping like we were all watching a real basketball game.

Aside from getting to see Lee Shin-young of the hit K-drama Crash Landing On You again onscreen, I was drawn to the endearing lineup of characters! Each of them made a mark, even the bit players. It was such an experience to crack up over punchlines, get teary-eyed over touching moments, and be inspired by their characters’ grit, strength, and resilience. It had an unexpected but beautiful ending. Rebound is a must-see.

The sports drama film, Rebound, was helmed by director Jang Hang-jun and released in South Korea on April 5, 2023. The screenplay, penned by Kim Eun-hee and Kwon Seong-hui, is based on the remarkable true story of basketball coach Kang Yang-hyeon and his team from Busan Jungang High School, who made it to the national championships final in 2012 with just six players on their roster. Ahn Jae-hong portrays coach Kang in the film, while Lee Shin-young, Jeong Jin-woon, and Jung Gun-joo bring to life the players on the team.

Jungang High School’s basketball team was once renowned, but after years of poor performance, they are now in shambles and at risk of being disbanded. To turn things around, the school brings in alumnus Kang Yang-hyeon, a former coach of the U-16 boys’ national team, as their new head coach. However, many players refuse to play under an unknown coach, causing several to quit. Despite this setback, Coach Kang perseveres and manages to recruit a team of six players, most of whom were rejected by other top basketball schools, for the National Basketball Championships. Together, they adopt Coach Kang’s motto: “There is no such thing as missed shots, only rebounds!” as they learn to play and live by it.
