Produced by GK Productions, the film “Apo Hapon: A Love Story” delivers excitement and kilig through the characters of a Japanese girl named Mizuki portrayed by Sakura Akiyoshi and Filipino historian Reyson played by ABS-CBN leading man JC de Vera.

A Japanese vlogger named Mizuki discovers more about his great grandfather Kazuo Toro, who chose to live with the Igorot people in the Philippines after escaping the Japanese Imperial Army during World War II, as depicted by former PBB Housemate Fumiya Sankai. Mizuki unraveled the truth about his great grandfather’s fate with the assistance of Reyson, a native historian.

Sakura Akiyoshi and Joel Lamangan at the special screening

The film’s narrative is distinct since it not only depicts a period love story but also presents historical information about the World War II. How the many sequences that narrate the past transitioned to present the story was beautifully done and easy to follow. The setting of the movie is relevant, especially to the younger generation. As part of the Gen Z, I admire how the concept was created.

As usual, JC’s acting skill was showcased in this movie and he balanced things out as Sakura is still new in acting and speaking the vernacular. She displayed comfort in delivering lines and acting out kilig scenes. Kilig slowly unfolded as JC’s and Sakura’s characters found themselves in a situation where they develop feelings for each other over time.

Sakura expressed her gratitude to her co-stars in an interview. She mentioned how JC helped her adjust as a new actress in the Philippines. Direk Joel Lamangan’s generosity and talent impressed the actress and she naturally looked forward to working with the highly acclaimed director on future projects.
