This was how The Skin Bureau Marketing Head Max Perez explained why the brand chose the country’s Primera Kontrabida Gladys Reyes as its first product endorser. “Siya po ang unang-unang endorser talaga namin.”

In a pretty pink dress, Kapuso actress Gladys was every inch a skin brand ambassadress during the virtual media conference last Saturday. She glowed and looked nothing like the wicked character she usually portrays onscreen. When The Philippine Star’s entertainment editor Ricky Lo complimented her about how her facial features seemed to have softened now compared to her Mara Clara days, Gladys laughingly responded, “Ay, thank you po! Para na bang hindi kontrabida? Puwede na bang hindi kontrabida, Tito?” She later went on to reveal the skin secrets behind the transformed look.

The Skin Bureau General Manager Jeff Geronimo shared how he powered through the tough times during this pandemic and used positive thinking to move forward in business. That’s how he and his team decided to launch new products and the first product endorser for the brand.
When asked why they chose Gladys, he said her timeless beauty and perseverance make her perfect for the brand.

Skin story

Aside from the expected attribution to beauty products, Gladys was honest enough to thank her genes and mom’s dedication to skin care for the flawless skin she has always been known for. Gladys said she just continued the skincare regimen her mom has taught her through the years and shared a skin secret she has been raving about in several interviews.

“Open ano na yan [secret], lagi kong sinasabi before, ‘yung pieces of calamansi, ‘yung fruit.

Gladys confirmed with The Manila Standard editor Nickie Wang that she’s passing on to her daughter the same skincare tips she learned from her mom.

While taking care of her family and handling several businesses (Sommereux catering and food delivery, That’s Entertainmeat meat supply, and Gladys Reyes online acting workshops!) were frequently mentioned during the interview, I caught Gladys emphasizing the need for moms and wives like her to take care of themselves during this pandemic. She said, “Ito rin ‘yung time, itong pandemic na’to, itong naka-lockdown, habang hindi pa normal ang lahat, ito na nga ang New Normal, to take good care of yourself also. Kasi minsan nane-neglect natin ‘yung health. Ang lakas nun maka-boost ng morale despite of what’s happening around us.”

Seeking self-care isn’t selfish

When Christina Alpad of the Manila Times asked Gladys for her thoughts on busy moms looking at self-care as a form of selfishness, the actress was quick to debunk the idea. “Of course not! Alam niyo po, ang self-care or self-love is definitely not selfish! Kasi lalo na tayong mga mommies, paano tayo makaka-function nang maigi kung hindi natin aalagaan ang sarili natin,” she said and went to to share her personal bouts with guilt when she gave birth to her firstborn and longed for a salon trip and pampering experience. She later reiterated, “Hindi po pagiging selfish ang self-love and self-care. For me, it’s also self-respect. It reflects.” She put emphasis on the value of skin in this issue.

Skincare beliefs, rules, and routine

When it comes to her personal self-care, Gladys strictly lives by certain rules like removing her makeup right after work, taking a shower at night for a restful sleep, and choosing the right products. Basta kailangan, religiously ang paggamit,” she said.

Here, Gladys explains how thoroughly washing off her makeup after taping is a MUST.

Gladys’ skincare routine with The Skin Bureau, her partner of choice, is no secret. She shared, “With the Skin Bureau Essentials, I’ve already tried their hand and body lotion. I’ve been using it and also my daughter, pinapagamit ko ‘yun sa kanya. She joked about how the scent seemed to have an effect on her husband, actor Christopher Roxas. Naaamoy ata ‘yung hand and body lotion!”

Gladys also enumerated other The Skin Bureau products she loves. “‘Yung mga soaps, I use the oatmeal with honey, and itong mga toner nila. Para mas mag-clear ‘yung skin and ‘yung glow lumabas. They have their night cream also, sa gabi po ito.” Her face suddenly lit up when she remembered her favorite, “Meron din silang parang BB cream! She also added the use of day gel and sunscreen from the brand to complete her routine. Gladys raved about how lucky she feels that she discovered the brand at a time she was looking for the right products. “Nakakatuwa rin kasi sumakto, I’ve been looking for a product para ma-maintain ang skin.

While Gladys is all for taking care of herself and maintaining great skin, she still has set limitations for herself. When asked about her take on invasive procedures and injections offered by beauty clinics, she said, “Siyempre, kanya-kanya naman ano. I have nothing against it. Atsaka usually kasi sabi nila kapag actor ka, tapos may Botox-Botox ‘di ba (She pointed at her forehead), baka raw mabawasan ang reaction mo. Ang pagtanda, hindi mo maiiwasan, hindi mo matatatakasan ‘yan pero you just have to age gracefully and be happy.”
